A threshold can be a point of change, a turning point, an opportunity, a possibility. It is where we hesitate, turn back, or decide to go on. For this issue of Open Doors, we are looking for work that moves between languages, places, and ways of being. Pieces that sit in the space between arrival and departure, belonging and distance. What does it mean to cross? What do we leave behind and what stays with us when we do?

Submissions accepted in English or Italian.

Work that is accepted will be published in the following formats:

• Print Edition
• PDF edition

Una soglia può essere un punto di cambiamento, un momento di svolta, un’opportunità, una possibilità. È il luogo in cui esitiamo, torniamo indietro o decidiamo di andare avanti. Per questo numero di Open Doors cerchiamo testi che si muovono tra lingue, luoghi e modi di essere. Scritti che abitano lo spazio tra arrivo e partenza, appartenenza e distanza. Cosa significa attraversare? Cosa lasciamo indietro e cosa resta con noi quando lo facciamo?

Accettiamo testi in italiano o in inglese.

Per inviare le proposte, scorrere in fondo alla pagina consultando precedentemente le linee guida di seguito riportate.

• We accept work in English or Italian.
• There is no age limitation for submissions but consider our readership is primarily adult.
• You can submit to multiple categories (short fiction, essay, poetry, visual art) and you can also submit hybrid works (a visual piece with a poem, for example).

• Accettiamo lavori in inglese o in italiano.
• Non ci sono limiti di età per le presentazioni, ma considera che i nostri lettori sono per la maggior parte adulti.
• Potete mandarci i vostri lavori anche in più di una categoria e anche in combinazione (per esempio racconto + arte visuale).

Word limits/format:

• Fiction/Nonfiction: Under 3,000 Words
• Poetry: Up to 3 pages of poetry
• Visual Art: up to 5 pieces of art
• Please submit written work in something resembling 12 point font and Times New Roman. The key is: legible.
• Keep your submission anonymous. Avoid putting your name or personal details on any page

Content

• We accept literary fiction, poetry and thought provoking essays.
• Please submit polished, edited and original work. We want to see your best.
• We are NOT looking for things that are specifically Italy focused. If your work happens to be about Italy, it is welcome, but Italy is by no means a theme.
• If you are submitting a chapter from a novel, be sure it can work as a stand alone piece.
• What we want: At Open Doors Review, we look for work that lingers. Writing and art that carries an edge, an urgency, or a tenderness that stays with us long after we’ve closed the page. Show us the humor that hides in sorrow, the questions behind desire, the beauty in discomfort. Surprise us with your voice, your vision, your risk.
• What we don’t want: We do not accept work that is sexually explicit, that promotes or glorifies violence, or that discriminates against individuals or groups on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, religion, or any other identity.

Previously Published/Simultaneous Submissions

• If your work has been previously published (this includes online and on blogs) then it will not be considered.
• We allow simultaneous submissions but if your work is accepted elsewhere, please inform us and we will remove your piece from our considerations.

Word Limits:

• Racconti e saggi: meno di 3,000 parole
• Le poesie: quante poesie rientrano in 3 pagine
• Arte Visuale: da 1 a 5 pezzi
• Si prega di inviare un lavoro scritto il più vicino possibile al carattere Times New Roman, 12. Chiarezza è la parola d’ordine!
• Mantieni anonima la tua candidatura: evita di inserire il tuo nome o dati personali in nessuna pagina

• Ci interessano la narrativa letteraria, la poesia ed i saggi stimolanti.
• Ti chiediamo di inviarci un testo il più possibile rifinito ed originale. Vogliamo leggere il tuo lavoro migliore.
• Il contenuto dipende da te. NON stiamo cercando componimenti basati specificamente su tematiche “Italiane.”
• Puoi mandare un capitolo di un libro non ancora pubblicato ma deve avere un senso compiuto.
• Cosa vogliamo: All’Open Doors Review cerchiamo opere che restino. Scrittura e arte che portino con sé un’urgenza, un’intensità o una tenerezza capaci di accompagnarci ben oltre l’ultima pagina. Mostrateci l’umorismo che si nasconde nel dolore, le domande celate nel desiderio, la bellezza che nasce dal disagio. Sorprendeteci con la vostra voce, la vostra visione, il vostro rischio.
• Cosa non vogliamo: Non accettiamo lavori esplicitamente sessuali, che promuovano o glorifichino la violenza, o che discriminino persone o gruppi sulla base di razza, genere, orientamento sessuale, religione o qualsiasi altra identità.

Precedentemente pubblicato / Sottomissione simultanea

• Se il tuo lavoro è già stato pubblicato (incluso versione online o blog), non verrà preso in considerazione.
• Puoi inviare il tuo lavoro contemporaneamente in più posti ma, qualora fosse accettato altrove, ti preghiamo di informarci e rimuoveremo il tuo pezzo dalle nostra lista.

• We accept any form of visual art in any medium. Photography, painting, graphics, sculpture, installation . . . surprise us!
• Video cannot be accepted at this time.
• Art must be original to the artist. For example: no photos of artwork done by others.

• Work that is not polished, edited, and ready for publication.
• Work that is in a language other than English or Italian.

• Work that greatly exceeds the word count recommendation.
• works that demean women or portray women as sexual objects.
• works that are racist

• works that advocate religious beliefs

• Lavori non rifiniti, non originali o non pronti per la pubblicazione.
• Lavori in lingua diversa dall’italiano o l’inglese.
• Lavori pubblicati precedentemente.
• Lavori con un numero massimo di parole eccedenti a quello comunicato precedentemente.
• Opere che umiliano le donne o le trattano come oggetti sessuali.
• Opere razziste.
• Opere omofobe.
• Opere che difendere le credenze religiose.
