{"id":411,"date":"2021-01-22T12:15:08","date_gmt":"2021-01-22T12:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.opendoorsreview.com\/?p=411"},"modified":"2025-04-21T13:36:04","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T13:36:04","slug":"over-the-sea-wall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.opendoorsreview.com\/index.php\/2021\/01\/22\/over-the-sea-wall\/","title":{"rendered":"Over the Sea Wall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Featured in the January 2021 Issue of The Open Doors Review. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendoorsreview.com\/index.php\/the-magazine\/\">View Magazine Here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poetry by Cynthia Boorujy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I bought my daughter a scarf to wrap round her head<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She wanted blood red like mine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the sweet pastels we dress the young<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thinking we must ease them into&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The searing violence of color<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are led by these saturations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My law school professor&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whose rhetoric was as crisp and elegant&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the moss green suits he had cut in Paris<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fire eater I met in the city square<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I followed him up the hill<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He played guitar in the grass<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking out through round violet shades<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or the one who never cut his hair<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And favored t-shirts with tangerine surfboards<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But she still has years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before she is drawn to siren men<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sun is searing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drying the water that splashes over the sea wall<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaving rough salt on our forearms&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">on cats\u2019 tails and faded motor bikes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cover yourself I tell her<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have far to walk<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Author Bio: Cynthia Boorujy is a writer and performer who has performed and has had her writing produced across the US. She has written scripts, plays, poetry, and short fiction.
